Cribriform hymen causes, symptoms, diagnosis, treatment

Before talking about the cribriform hymen, let’s give you a short brief about the hymen. The hymen is a thin piece of mucosal tissue that surrounds or partially covers the external vaginal opening. It forms part of the vulva or external genitalia. Hymen derives from the Ancient Greek word meaning thin skin or membrane.

What is a cribriform hymen?

A cribriform hymen is a rare condition in which a girl’s hymen, the thin membrane across the opening of her vagina, has many small holes in it.

What causes cribriform hymen?

Like other types of hymen, a cribriform hymen is a congenital disorder, this means cribriform hymen is something a girl is born with. No one knows why this happens.

Symptoms and diagnosis

Cribriform hymen symptoms like labial type hymen’s. there may be no symptoms until a female reaches puberty and begins using tampons during her menstrual periods or her first vaginal sexual life.

If there are symptoms present, these may include:

  1. pain or discomfort when she uses a tampon.
  2. Tampon cannot insert properly.
  3. Periods that last longer than the normal 4 to 7 days
  4. Pain or excessive bleeding during vaginal sex.
  5. Abdomen pain and or back pain.

A cribriform hymen is diagnosed by a gynecologist during the examination of a baby or child by accident or at puberty if it causes problems with a girl’s periods. If you try to look for your hymen, it may be difficult to pinpoint.

So, What is the treatment of cribrifrom hymen?

Surgery may not be necessary in some cases . However, it is necessary in some circumstances:

  1. excessive pain during sexual intercourse or use of tampons.
  2. Menstrual blood cannot flow out causes pain or discomfort.
  3. The rare case is the young female who has coagulopathy disorder or takes some anti-coagulant medication. If there is a problem of blood coagulation, the female may be at risk of large amounts of bleeding during the first sexual life.

When necessary, minor surgery named hymenectomy is performed to remove the extra hymenal tissue and create a normal-sized vaginal opening.

Are there other types of hymen?

There are several types of hymen shapes. crescentic hymen, annular hymen, dentate hymen, denticular type hymen, fimbriate hymen, lunar-shape hymen, septate hymen, bifenestrate hymen, cribriform hymen, microimperforate hymen, imperforate hymen, labial hymen and parous introitus types hymen. Some women are even born without hymen! But, don’t fret. If you have a different type of hymen, it’s not uncommon.
