So, What is hymen?
The hymen is a thin membrane that surrounds the opening to the vagina. It forms part of the vulva, or external genitalia, and is similar in structure to the vagina.
In most newborn girls, the hymen has an annular appearance. The ring shape extends all of the ways around the vaginal rim. Oestrogen can cause the hymen to thicken (increase in depth) and also to increase in width.
In children, a common appearance of the hymen is crescent-shaped, although many shapes are possible.
We are not sure of the exact biological role of the hymen. Hymens change throughout life in response to hormone levels primarily estrogens.
Are everyone hymens the same?
There are several types of hymen shapes. crescentic hymen, annular hymen, dentate hymen, fimbriate hymen, lunar-shape hymen, septate hymen, bifenestrate hymen, cribriform hymen, microimperforate hymen and imperforate hymen. Some women are even born without hymen! The most common shape of the hymen is crescentic hymen that presents no tissue at the 12 o’clock position. If you are interested, we have also introduced other types of the hymen in another video.
Where hymen located?
If you try to look at an intact hymen, it may be difficult to pinpoint. If you do want to go exploring, though, it’s located about 1-2 centimeters inside your vaginal opening.
Reasons for hymen breakage
The hymen can be broken in a variety of ways. Sexual activity including penetration, oral sex, fingering, and masturbation can break the hymen, yes, but so can the insertion of a tampon or even exercising. It’s also worth noting that you can break your hymen without even knowing it. If it’s still there, however, it can cause temporary bleeding or discomfort. Once a hymen is broken, either naturally or through a hymenectomy, it will not grow back.
Hymen and virginity
There is a lot of misinformation about the hymen and how it relates to virginity.
It is wrongly assumed that by looking at the hymen you can prove whether a woman is a virgin. Although this ‘virginity testing has been condemned as a violation of human rights, it still continues in many parts of the world today and can be a controversial issue across different cultures and religions.
